Maripoma Engineering Limited has begun construction of the Ofankor-Nsawam dual carriage road, which links Nsawam to Kumasi and is part of Ghana’s National Route 6 (N6). The project is expected to be completed within 24 months.
Kwasi Amoako-Atta, Ghana’s Minister of Roads and Highways, confirmed the commencement of construction works on the project when he visited the site to check on progress and get information on problems faced by the contractor. The information gathered will help the Ministry find practical solutions for the identified issues.
During the site visit, Kwabena Bempong, the project supervisory consultant, briefed the minister and his entourage about the progress of work. “All is set for actual construction to begin after the clearing and construction of rights of way to divert traffic to speed up work. We are all but set to begin work in a few weeks and would work day and night to complete the construction ahead of schedule,” he said.
The project involves the construction of a 2-kilometre road with eight lanes and a 16.85-kilometre road with ten lanes, extending from Ofankor to the White House stretch. Eventually, two extra lanes will be added to the dual carriageway with two more service lanes to the adjoining communities.
Three lanes will also be added to the Pokuase to Nsawam dual roads to make it five on each side, with an additional provision of nine pedestrian footbridges and an underpass. There will be provision for wider drainage systems, streetlights, road signs, and pedestrian walkways.
Amoako-Atta said the Roads and Highways ministry and the government were committed to improving the project’s efficiency and timely execution. He commended the Ga West Municipal Assembly and especially the MCE for always standing by the ministry and assisting during challenges.
The Ofankor-Nsawam Road plays a major role in the country’s economic activities. It serves as a major arterial road for communities in the Ga West Municipal Assembly, Pokuase, Amasaman, Medie, Sarpeiman, and many more.
The road’s strategic location makes it one of the most critical links, serving the northern, central, western, and southern parts of the country, and making transportation easier for Ghanaians.
It also boosts trade between Ghana and its landlocked neighbours like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger and helps to transport cargo from Ghana’s ports to these countries.
Potholes, depressions, and drainage problems currently plague the road, leading to traffic issues in the area. Therefore, the national transport policy of the Ministry of Roads and Highways laid down objectives related to the creation of an integrated, efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable transport system. This system will help meet societal needs, support growth and help to reduce poverty.
